Importance of mental skills
Mental skills are one of the most important part of the game.
Athletes will work on their physical and technical skills every single day. They will work so hard on many of their skills to improve their game, with high emotion, and also motivation. However there must be times when they feel that their emotion and motivation is just not there with them, in both practices and games, or maybe in daily life. Many athletes may not be aware, the brain controls your body and may be its time to start training you brain and mentality.
Just a short story, when I was three years old I started playing tennis and I really got into it. I loved it so much and played so hard every day, and at some time when I was in elementary school, my goal was to become a professional tennis player. I was not great, but was about good to win few small junior tournaments in the region.
However when I entered middle school, my motivation was not there anymore like it was before.
It felt like I was not having fun playing the game of tennis.
Thinking back, I am sure that if someone was there to support my mental game, and managed my confidence, thinkings, and emotions, my life of tennis would have been much different. I did continue to play tennis, but being a professional athlete is not something that you could accomplish with such motivation.
So how would I support if I can use a time machine and go back to my old days?
The main reason I started to study about mental training is because I started to think like above.
For sure the first thing I would do is to “Listen to his (my) feelings”.
To say, athletes are often lonely.
Games with full crowd and noise looks splendid, but the reality is that they work on their fundamental skills daily, over and over and drive yourself until you reach the limit, or sometimes over that limit.
In such circumstances, there is not much opportunity for athletes to open up their mind and output their feelings to someone.
Your Mom and Dad will support and they will cheer for you for sure. Your coaches will help develop your physical and technical skills, that’s for sure as well.
Any support for your mentality?
So, here is the point.
How about your mentality?
Yes, the truth is, there are few athletes that have someone close to them and can open up their feelings, and support and train your “mentality”.
To output your feelings verbally is very important, it will connect to reconfirming your goals, and also you will be able to review what you must do to achieve that goal.
If you are losing confidence, it is important to find a way to regain that confidence. When you are losing confidence in your play, it will definitely affect the performance in important matches. Training your mentality, or talking to someone about your play or current feelings, can lead to regaining such confidence, and mental coach can fully assist with you for such, from various point of view.
My goal and hope is support athletes, by training mental skills and also support their “heart”, so they can achieve their future goal.
To all athletes, let your dream come true!! Cheers!!!!
